Home Sprinklers
Home sprinklers are not as common as they are in apartment buildings and other large buildings but they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the kitchen where most home fires take place. They are effective at eliminating fires in specific areas even when no one is home.
Home sprinklers are very simple which is what makes them so reliable. They work by releasing water when an area gets too hot. Basically a series of pipes is run along the ceiling with nozzles spaced evenly around the length of the pipes. On the nozzle is a plug made from either hollow glass with fluid inside or a solder plug.
When a fire is started the heat builds up which either heats up the liquid in the glass causing it to explode releasing the water or the solder will melt releasing the water. They only open in areas with heat but they will drain the entire system all at once so if only one opens a lot of water will come through that opening before it stops. Other nozzles will remain unaffected and the system can be recharged with water and reused.
